There is a lot of conversation here about the flu vaccine, which is not what I expected from this board. With healthy adults in developed countries, I do not believe that a flu vaccine is necessary in a normal situation. I received the flu vaccine only once, when I was pregnant, because the risk to a fetus is quite high even if the mother recovers normally, which is most of the time.

However, for diseases like mumps, measles, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis, and so on, I cannot honestly understand anybody's resistance to vaccination. These diseases kill people every day in underdeveloped countries. I know that there are extremely rare cases of the hepatitis B vaccine causing fatal reactions in newborns with already-compromised immune systems, but that is easily circumvented by waiting for the infant's health to recover.

As a new mother, I have a feeling that I might not be able to hold my outrage in check when and if I find out that one of my son's future friends is not vaccinated because his parents chose to believe a lot of fear mongering by the irresponsible media rather than educate themselves about the real facts and risks of inoculation.

I'm going to say from personal experience, when I was a child I received the flu vaccine. It made me deathly ill. I was hospitalized. After that, my mother vaccinated me again when I was a few years older, thinking it was just that type of strand they injected me with at that time made me sick. (Since the flu evolves so often.) After receiving my second injection I became incredibly sick yet again, worse than when I actually caught the flu many years later. :/

On the other side of this, I have had all my required vaccines, IE Hep B, C, Tetnis, ETC, and they have never made me sick. I also feel I'm protected.

For me; unless the vaccine is REQUIRED I do NOT want it in my body unless I believe I am susceptible. I want to take care of my body my own way. HOWEVER, if it is something extremely dangerous that is easily transmitted, I will not be so stubborn as to not get myself vaccinated.
The flu? Happens every year. People's immune systems are lowered, and I will not make myself sick for something that isn't extremely deadly if taken care of properly.

Oh yes, Conway. Dartmouth is pretty impressive, and he's had jobs all across the board. Lucky man, I'm surprised he still has a sense of humour.
He does have some wonderful points, however it's not the same when you're talking about table salt vs. thermisol/thimerosal/thiomersal/merthiolate in a vaccine you are pretty much legally forced to get. Good luck getting into a public/private school or college/university without the proper vaccines. Salt on the other hand, is really an option to put on your dinner.
Pretty much anything can kill you, but that's not the point. Or at least I don't think so. I would rather direct the attention at the fact that they do cause harm and are pretty much a necessity in the modern world.

thoimersal is a molecule that contains a mercury atom.

With this same logic, you are a huge explosion waiting to happen (you are mostly H2o hydrogen-highly combustible, and oxygen-required for things to burn)

table salt(NaCl) would be lethal, because it contains chlorine.

Here's something from Dr. Samuel Conway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHdxNFm2pn0&feature=related
If the mouse on his shoulder makes you doubt his credentials, then please look at his wikipedia page. ;3

Saying that something injected into our bodies unnaturally is good for you in all aspects is quite ignorant. It bypasses all the immune system's basic work and defies all things around it; you can clearly see that after you get one and the injection sight becomes red and swells. Let me get something right; I'm not going all out and saying that vaccines didn't originally help out the races they're applied to; but the recipes have changed.

Your Penn and Teller video is wrong if you want to be completely honest on the topic. It's 1 in 88 now according to the CDC. It runs much higher in males; 1 in 54.

Before I go any further and put my neck out, I want to give you some more simple facts. Thermisol is virtually in every vaccine; it's basically a mercury cocktail. Thermisol does help in not killing us immediately, true, but the long term damage is astounding. It was supposed to be removed from all the vaccinations in the US and most of Europe, however in the US the FDA has recently admitted that it still allows the use of Thermisol in most vaccines. If you need more information on that just type in "mercury in vaccine 2012" into Google. You'll get an array of results. It's been proven that all vaccination for children up to two months old and most after that age have thermisol in them. That's 7 doses of a lethal chemical in just eight weeks; pregnant women aren't even supposed to eat 12 oz fish during a term week because of it's mercury content. They are not supposed to have some kinds of canned tuna, shark, mackerel or untested local fish (from your favourite watering hole).
I look forward to your response.

I can see why this would be a debate. And I want to partake this discussion.

When the Swine Flu broke ease, almost everyone got vaccinated. Now it has been in news that people have gotten narcolepsy out of it. Other serious illnesses are now going to be research.
I didn't get a vaccination since I was skeptic. My sisters who got them both got fever after it and their arm, the sopt where the vaccination was put, swell. They also felt quite bad and couldn't go to school. And we're talking about 11 and 13 year olds.

it's true! even if you don't care about getting sick, you should still get vaccinated. not getting vaccinated reduces herd immunity.

NOT getting vaccinated does more harm, looking at a society as a whole, than getting vaccinated, by far.

i'm not sure myself, i guess if people wanted to disagree with me they could? this is just where kaeli told me to put the information.

I saw that you were to take this to debate, but I don't really know what the debate is... could you please clarify?
