Clearly a magic put from outer space one day though, "I want to make something that can be fried, grilled and baked but still tastes like everything." and then the pug thought (thinking is a dangerous pass time for a pug) so hard that it pooped an egg and then it hatched and the pug ate it. Thus the egg came before the chicken. PROOF: my pug that is snoring down by my feet told me so.

@Alygator, no reason to reply, but I think you have the chicken coming first thing down but not where they came from. I personally believe that some animal evolved into a chicken, say, the closest ancestor to the chicken, a T-Rex, I'll copy Thy and say the T-Rex is AABBA, the T-Rex would then lay an egg, which would contain AABBB, which would be just like a T-Rex, but slightly mutated, that animal would then lay an egg, let's say near the mass extinction, and the egg becomes AABBC, and is then smaller than AABBB or AABBA. Then AABBC lays an egg, yet again smaller, and more feathers possibly called AABBD, meteor crashes, AABBD is small enough to hide and survives. It mates, lays an egg, AABBE, another mutation and thus the chicken (or AABBE) hatches stays the same with very slight changes through time and humans come around, domesticate them and with selective breeding become the modern day chicken. At least that's how I see it.

Wow Thy, never seen it looked at with such a logical, genetic approach to things... must say that does make a great deal of sense. I had always though of it, in a bit more simplistic terms, as two chicken-like animals mating and laying and egg that would be the first true chicken, but your explanation lays it out much better :D <br /> <br /> Egg first ;)

the 'chicken egg' came before the chicken, I'll explain my reasoning in detail.<br /> <br /> For the sake of argument, we will apply a much dummed-down genetic code*, represented by letters of the lattin alphabet, along a single line, from pre-chicken species, to 'true' chicken species, and say that the first animal with the 'exact' genetic structure of a chicken was 'AAABD'.<br /> We will start with 'AABA', anyone looking at this animal would not know it from a chicken, there are only a few genetic differences. This animal mates, and lays an egg. inside the egg is 'AABB'.<br /> 'AABB' is not 'AABA' because, the minute it was concieved, its genetic structure changed, infinitesimally. This happens every time a new animal of any species is concieved.<br /> 'AABB' is born undeveloped inside an egg, hatches, grows up, mates, and lays an egg itsself. Inside this egg is 'AABC'. Still not a 'true' chicken. Again, a small mutation took place. 'AABC' hatches, grows up, and lays an egg. This egg, however, is the first 'true' chicken egg, because inside it is 'AABD', which we have already defined as the first 'true' chicken. I'm going with egg. Because new creatures are created through natural selection or a random mutation that happened to be for the better.<br /> So one egg was born with those characteristics, or mutations and hatched to be the beginning of the chicken.<br /> <br /> That's my take :P

Ah, my friend and I used to debate this back in middle school. Fun times :D<br /> <br /> Anyway, I can think of reasons for both answers:<br /> <br /> Chicken = the chicken evolved from critters (maybe dinos, maybe something else?) and laid the egg. Therefore, the chicken was first!<br /> <br /> Egg = the egg was laid by constantly evolving critters and therefore was evolved into a chicken before it was hatched. <br /> <br /> Or, you could look at it this way: Neither came first! The egg was laid with the first chicken inside it, and therefore they're tied. :P

Coming from Christian beliefs and my reasoning...<br /> <br /> The chicken. Otherwise, what incubated this egg? It would have died, perished, without a chicken parenting it properly. Evolution may change appearance, but how does it change instinct? Birds feed their young such careful, specific things... How can a creature of any different genetics and instinct care for a different creature, even if only in gradual progression? <br /> <br /> It feels like there's too many possibly types of evolution.. I need to learn the generally accepted idea.
