🧩 Agility Trial – Core Rules

1️⃣ Preparation Phase

Goal: Understand the course and obstacle order.

• The full course map is displayed, including all obstacles and their sequence.
• You must memorize the obstacle order and plan your handler’s route.
• No interaction is allowed during this phase; it is strictly observational.
• Start of the game requires you to know the obstacle sequence by memory.

2️⃣ Placement Phase

Goal: Position your dog and handler.

• Open the left navigation menu to select and place your dog and handler.
• Dog must be placed inside the Start Zone (a marked tile area).
• Handler may be placed anywhere on the map, including outside the Start Zone.
• Placement is locked once committed.

3️⃣ Main Phase (Game Turns)

Goal: Navigate the course and complete all obstacles in sequence.

Each round: - Both Handler and Dog get one movement phase (independent of each other). - Handler Movement: - Can move freely within their allowed range each turn. - Dog Movement: - May only move to tiles that are within line of sight of both dog and handler. - If the handler cannot see the dog, the dog cannot be directed. - Movement is tile-based, using a hex grid with 6-direction navigation.

Skipping Actions

• If you don't need to move either actor further, press End Turn to skip the rest of the round.

4️⃣ Obstacle Interaction Rules

Goal: Complete each obstacle correctly and in sequence.

• Obstacles must be completed in the exact order shown during the preparation phase.
• To begin an obstacle:
  • Your dog must be standing on the "Enter" mat of that obstacle.
  • You must then press Commit.
• Committing to an obstacle consumes the dog’s full round.
• After committing, the dog automatically moves to the obstacle’s Exit mat.

Faults

You receive a fault if: - You commit to an obstacle out of sequence. - You bypass or skip an obstacle.

5️⃣ Scoring & Time Rules

Winner is determined by: 1. Fewest total faults 2. Fastest completion time

Time Measurement

• Each round represents 5 seconds of real time.
• If your course time exceeds allotted time (rounds × 5 seconds), extra rounds are added:
  • 1 additional round is added per 5 seconds over the original time limit.

This minimalist approach prioritizes: - Long-term maintainability - High performance - Total control over the user experience

🎨 Artwork & Visual Design

Agility Trials artwork was created by Henry Goss and Bobbie, one sprite map at a time using GIMP.

• Vector art and interface icons are a mix of:

  • Original artwork
  • Public domain or open source imagery
  • Raster art converted to vector
  • Commercial SVGs purchased from icon vendors

• The interface makes extensive use of standard Unicode entities for clean, symbolic display across platforms.

• All visual content is optimized for clarity and performance on modern browsers.

• The background image (world map) was generated using AI tools.
