Xylax's Ala style art tutorial!
Started By
Hello! I am your Xylax, and I'd love to present how I try to match Ala's overal art style. I think it would help you guys to understand how to fit your own style a bit more into dog's scenes and make it less differently drawn, if you'd like that!

ANOTHER LINK NOT ON IMAGESHACK

beware, though! pretty huge jpg!

Don't be afraid to ask questions, if I missed something. I will be sure to make more tutorials in the future :D

Also, answer in advance: I'm using very old Photoshop 8.0, called CS 1. To make sure everyone can access all functions. They can be named differently, but they're in same places.

here's the brush image.

Xy, how much time did it take you to finish the rabbit?

oh wait, I'm sorry, I'm an idiot. I do have a scanner, it's a Brother like yours, but it's used moreso as a printer than anything else. Unfortunately I din't bring it with me to college since I had no use for it since I don't have any writing classes this semester (I haveen't printed a single paper so far).

Look around on sites like Craigslist, you can get one for dirt cheap.
I got mine (really nice one, Brother MFC-240C) for free off Kijiji.
http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/mfc240c-1-lg.jpg

I kinda need to invest in a scanner, I believe :/

However, I do believe hat I'm drawing better on the computer than on paper now, which is a surprise to me. But it easier for me to do skethcces on paper than on the computer.

Another tip could be to draw your art on paper first and then colour it digitally (which is how Hel's art is done)

Here is a tutorial:
1. Scan your image.
2. Take your scanned image and open it up in GIMP (free art program)
3. Go to "COLORS" at the top and down to "COLOR TO ALPHA"
http://i46.tinypic.com/w7bxqh.jpg
Click "OK" or whatever it asks.
4. Create a NEW LAYER (you should know how to do this if you're even attempting digital art so I'm not going to explain) that is white and put it UNDER your sketch layer.
5. Create a layer ABOVE THE WHITE LAYER and label it "Colours" or something.
6. Colour your image and stay in the lines
7. Erase AROUND the sketch lines to get rid of the scanned paper parts.
8. etc etc done
i am an artist
http://i50.tinypic.com/zn4y8o.png

Xy, I want to thank you for a lot! My drawings have definitely improved in my eyes, and I definitely feel like things are becoming a lot more anatomically correct. Coloring is going somewhat oky, but I'm finally using references! :D

Even though I didn't exactly stick to trying out Ala's style, I'e adopted some of the steps in the tutorial to be put in use every time I draw. I am trying out to do something like what you showed, but I'm waiting for the tablet to do that :L

Some stuff I've done:
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3

try googling old adobe products, like photoshop 8.0 (CS1), they're very cheap today C:

Where did you buy the program?

08-11-2012 at 7:42 AM
Yea there were 16 layers xD

And I actually had another version of the pic before this one but with a friends help I was able to fix the legs to make it more proportional :>

Id say I did rather well for my first try xD

08-11-2012 at 2:17 AM
oooh yes. Are you sure you used layers? :o
there's definitely some good shading going on there, and better anatomy than previous picture, for sure xD

WRONG LINK

I am so sorry xD

Here is the right one

link

08-10-2012 at 9:27 PM
really? I'm sure I saw this drawing long time ago :o maybe... maybe similar, I guess.
Honestly I don't see in it anything that I showed in the tutorial :S

08-10-2012 at 9:04 PM
Well, I tried my hardest, and seeing as how its my first try, I think I did really well :)

I normally draw cartoony, so realistic is WAYYYY out of my comfort zone :)

**link removed xD**

well it's photoshop. I just use 3-5 pixel brush for both sketch and lineart e-e

08-9-2012 at 8:20 PM
one more question xD

What is the range of brush sizes you use for the sketching?

I prefer using larger brush sizes, but I always seem to make my image more cartoony as a result. And then using too small doesn't help either.

I use GIMP and I'm comfortable with a .15 brush size, but I'm not sure if sketching is supposed to be bigger or smaller.
