Is There a Breed for Everything?
Started By
May not be the best idea for a debate, but we'll see how it turns out. ;)

Do you think there is a breed out there for everything?

What job is there that is missing an adequate breed?

I shall save my opinion for the debate.

If you don't breed towards a certain thing, and the animal comes out however.

That would mean there wouldn't be constancy and would mean the animals are scatterbred.

Breeding a breed towards a distinct goal is what helps keep it on track.

Goals aren't easily achieved if they're always changing and are random.

I'm not saying other breeds can't do things of another's, that was never stated. My German Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix does lure sports (for sighthounds) and weight pulling (Sled, and power breeds)

But a breeder should be breeding towards a goal, which is producing offspring better than their parents at something. That should be being up to breed standard being able to preform.

You can't take a long line of high drive working bred Malinois and turn them into a lazy house pet by how you raise them. Unless you get one that's an outlier.

And there are dogs bred for the same thing, but have different styles for different preferences. Border Collies herd with an intense stare, Australian Shepherds have a looser stare and are vocal, Australian Cattledogs get in and nip for larger herding animals.

If you breed without care you create a lacking.

If my dog didn't have ancestors bred to be able to work, then I wouldn't be able to do my sports with him.

:)

Every dog has a job to do, weather its jumping over jumps, tracking people or just being a great friend to a family. They do not need to be bred for it. I believe any dog can do any type of job. They may not be the best at it, or can only do vary little of it, but they can do it.

LOL On one of my forums the current trick of the month is teaching your dog to do the laundry. :)

I miss the old GSD. They are sometimes called frog dogs =/ But at least there are still working ones like for the policemen etc. (: I couldn't think of any jobs, other than my laundry XD

Yeah, a lot of breeds are being bred for looks. Even some who used to be bred for a purpose (English Bulldogs, Neapolitan Mastiffs, Dachshunds) are becoming unhealthy because they started breeding for looks.

An old working Neapolitan Mastiff is an amazing animal, but now they have excessive wrinkles and it hinders them.

I think most dog breeds had a "job" to do, before we started breeding dogs like chihuahuas and labradoodles and whatnot. I can't think of a job that's missing a breed lol. idk
