Evolution

Definition: evolution (ev•o•lu•tion): A change in the genetic composition of a population during successive generations as a result of natural selection acting on the genetic variation among individuals, resulting in the development of a new species.

A bit of info on evolution: The theory of evolution is based on Darwin's "survival of the fittest" theory. Basically, the animals that are most capable of survival are most likely to find a mate and to reproduce (example: a female ape looks for the strongest male ape to mate with because she knows their young will be stronger and better able to find food, reproduce, and surive). The way that the female ape decides that she should pick the fittest male to "father" her young is called "natural selection" (I put father in quotes because it's more of a human word). Over time, if natural selection continues to occur, an entirely new species will be created from the old one.

Well, my grandpa recently gifted me a book on evolution, and (call me a nerd) I thought it was very interesting. It talked about how whales used to be small, four-legged, land creatures, and how they over time evolved into what they are today and other things of that sort. However, evolution is not taught in school because of religion. Many religions state that God/a God/multiple god(s)/etc created human beings as God's supreme and most intelligent species. The theory of evolution states that human beings evolved from ape-like creatures to cave men and ultimately into the advanced creatures that we are today.

Religion also counters evolution by stating that the god created all the creatures at once, whereas evolution states that certain specie developed over time to create what creatures are in existance today.

I think evolution should be taught in school as it seems to be a very important piece of the history of our planet, the animals and plants on it, and even us as human beings. I know some people won't even consider it because it so strongly counters religion, but then again maybe some people actually believe in it (as I do). I believe that the theory of evolution is far more realistic than that of religion. Honestly, thinking that there is a being so powerful as God to be able to create living breathing animals, an intelligent species, multiple planets, stars, galaxies, and so much more... It just seems a bit far-fetched. And on top of that the Earth has been in existance for so long and gone through changes, yet the animals and plants haven't changed or adapted very much or not at all? I have a hard time believing that.

...Anyways, now that my position is out of the way, what do you think of evolution? Is evolution how we got here? Did God create us like it says in the Bible? Should evolution be taught in school, or is it just a bunch of ridiculous nonsense? Give your argument on evolution.
