Owning Wolves

What's up with everyone saying not to get one or they are going to kill you? I dont see the point. Ive done my research and know the risks.

Does it have to be a wolf/wolf dog?

There's breeds that look quite wolf like, why not pick something like that?

http://www.dogbreedworld.com/dogbreeds/wolflikebreeds.php

Of course it's important to do a lot of research into any breed you wish to own, but these animals would be far easier to care for than a wolf/wolf dog.

Editing to add: I've no problems with people owning such animals, as long as they can handle them. I know many people that own wolf dogs and care for them great.
But the fact is, many people just can't give these animals the care they need. Hence the alternative of buying wolfy looking dogs.

"I can't have a WOLF but I can have a WOLF DOG in Georgia."
Nope. There was a link posted earlier in this thread that proved you couldn't.

Wolves and Wolf hybrids of any content are 100% illegal:

"Possession of wolves and wolf Hybrids is prohibited in the state; they are defined as "Wild Animals."
"Wild animal" means any animal which is not wildlife and is not normally a domestic species in this state. This term specifically includes any hybrid or cross between any combination of a wild animal, wildlife, and a domestic animal. Offspring from all subsequent generations of such crosses or hybrids are wild animals.
28-5-4(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to import, transport, transfer, sell, purchase or possess any wild animal ... without first obtaining a wild animal license from the department... (b) Wild animal licenses will be issued only to persons engaged in the wholesale or retail wild animal business or persons exhibiting wild animals to the public."

I understand I am not ready and besides, I can't have a WOLF but I can have a WOLF DOG in Georgia. I don't even know where to get the license I need. And being at school from 7:35 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. doesn't give me enough time to excersie the sdog without skipping homeowrk. I even have to skip homework to play with my blind/deaf beagle and cripple golden retriever. With a hamster in the house, I doubt he'd survive 3 seconds without being killed by the wolf dog. Its hot 24/7 here and I think they need coldness sometime. My book of dog breeds doesn't help me at all. It just says when they were crossed and they are 100% sweet and it says nothbing about aggresion except they bneed a pack

As an owner of a mid-content wolfdog, I will say right now that with your current attitude towards them, you are NOT READY to own one.

You must be 100% ready for something that is NOT A DOG.

You have to be ready to treat the animal as if it weighs 150lbs from the very beginning. You can not let them get away with anything unless you are prepared to have it come back to bite you (figuratively speaking or not) later.

My wolfdog requires 3-4 hours of exercise EVERY day, and requires constant supervision - if he doesn't have both of these things, he goes on destruction sprees.

I would safely bet that you have never had a dog tear your kitchen completely apart - countertops, drawers, cupboards all in pieces on the floor - damages amounting to about $5,000 all in a matter of hours.

Trust me, for the sake of you and the animal, you are not ready.

The fact that reading all four of these pages and you seem to not be getting it worries me. I don't want to sound so rude but you need to learn to listen. I'm glad that you are too young to own a wolf and I'm even more glad Georgia has laws making it 100% illegal. That right there just saved your life and that wolf's life.

A wolf is not a dog in any form or way possible. They do not think or act like a dog. You can't just go to the pet store and buy dog food for it either. And how do I know this? I owned one.

He was 97% wolf and 3% German Shepherd. He came into our home at 8 weeks old and he was fine until puberty where we had to position ourselves as a higher rank in his pack. He had to know. From that first time in the house he was being taught that my father and mother came first and then myself. Come maturity he tried to challenge my father but he again learned he is not alpha and will not be.

Reading through all of this shows you don't understand about wolves and what they really are. That also means you wouldn't be able to handle one because you don't understand how different they are. Again not trying to be rude but I'm telling you the complete truth in this. Owning a dog will never ready you for a wolf. Go volunteer at a zoo and see first hand how different and undog-like they really are. Even so that still wouldn't entirely ready you. You need to be mentally and physically strong against them and be able to know how a pack works. Just knowing isn't enough either.

I'm sorry but when you get older and can move out to wherever you want just don't get a wolf/hybrid. Your thinking on this subject and attitude towards it is going to get you and the wolf killed.

Humans did not evolve from monkeys, Humans and Apes share a common primate ancestor.

All I can say is.

Go adopt a dog from a shelter and save a life. There are enough homeless dogs in this world, don't see why people think they HAVE to have a wolf or a wolf-hybrid.

12-23-2011 at 5:38 PM
That makes no sense, of course dogs descended from wolves. Humans descended from monkeys, but we aren't considered monkeys are we? No.

I left out that part that they dont need human love. The things i have to say wouldn't fit in 600 pages. It would fir around the world. If only you could read my mind, would you find everything I have to say

They're not the same species anymore because of human intervention. That doesn't mean that a human taking in a wolf is going to change that wolf into a dog. It's not going to happen. Not over one generation, not over ten.

Wolves do not need love or human companionship. If they did, how would they have survived out in the wild completely undisturbed by people? How do they do it today?

They're not domesticated animals. They do not want your love. They don't understand it.

12-23-2011 at 3:12 PM
As I was saying, wolves and dogs both need love. If a wolf is not a dog, then are scientists wrong about dogs descending from wolves?

She is afraid that I am going to kick her out, so she tries to act strong by attacking. Living in a home is not good for her.

I am planning on putting her down in January or February because her hips hurt her and she lives in constant fear and stress. It is not good for wolves.

I am sorry about your state not allowing wolves to be owned because some can be great pets, but it is for the best. For them and for you.

As for volunteering, you should do it. I have been volunteering at my rescue for 5 years now and I am in high school. I play 2 sports, I work, and still have time to volunteer. So there really is no excuse. If I can do it, so can you. it really pays off.

Jingle, roo is right a wolf is NOT a dog. Believe me, I would know. I own a 94% wolf hybrid. She is fearful of humans and does not trust easily. It took me a year and a hlaf just to get her to trust me, and she will attack if you push her too hard. She has bitten me 4 times. They are not domesticated and should not be owned.

They think differently and have different instincts. A wolf is not supposed to be owned by humans because they are feral animals, they have had no contact with humans and do not know how to be handled by them.

They don't need human companionship or love, they need their pack. A wolf back is tremendously different from a human pack. Human packs are more accepting and loving about faults than a wolf pack. This causes wolves to be fearful in homes. My wolf's hip joints pop out of place when she runs and jumps. This is considered a weakness in the wolf world, and she knows it. She knows that if she was in a wolf pack, she would be killed or left to starve. This is why she lives in fear all the time.
It's really for the best...

12-23-2011 at 2:14 PM
>.< Still hating every single law about wolves not being able to be owned in Georgia

12-23-2011 at 2:12 PM
A wolf does not need love. I'm sorry. They are not meant to form bonds with people. They may receive a degree of "love" from pack members and their natural social structure. But you are not a part of that, and you never will be. Wolves do not love you like dogs do. They may tolerate your presence, but they don't love you.

This isn't about you. That's what's concerning me. You keep bringing it back to what's right for you. Ultimately, it's your responsibility to consider what's right for the animal.

It's the same reason people used to buy lions and tiger cubs on impulse then have to surrender them to rescues. It's always me, and what I want. That's why they have these laws, people don't consider that the animal has needs and it's not going to be the beautiful, majestic, loving creature you always imagined.

You say treat others the way you want to be treated if everything within you wanted to be running free with a pack out in the wilderness, would you want someone keeping you locked up in a house? A lot of property isn't going to cut it. These animals need space.

If you really don't understand how dangerous these, and really any wild animal can be, I'm very comfortable with the fact that you're not old enough yet to make the decision to get a wolf. They aren't dogs. They really, really aren't.

So? A person is a person. It needs love, food, water and a companian. So does a wolf and so does a dog. They are all the same. A chihuahua might not look like a wolf from a first glance. They both have 4 sharp teeth called canines. They both can howl, bark, communicate the same way. They can both dominate another and make a pack. My point, they are all equal no matter shape nor size nor crippled, deaf, mute, dumb, blind. No matter what , dog will be dogs. A wolf can be like a person. They have attitudes and the elders are usually the alphas or dominated. Just because they have 4 legs doesn't mean a wolf can't have a human companian. Does it? I wouldn't like it if I was forbidden to be with my friend unless I had a permit and was expierenced and neather would you.

A wolf is not a dog.

12-23-2011 at 1:31 PM
I really don't know. I would think I'd have to give up being a volunteer for my job as becoming an author or the other way around. I don't understand why Georgia doesn't allow wolves to be owned. It's unfair. A dog is a dog so treat it that way. A wolf is not like a terrorist. It won't bomb your house. It's not fair. Don't they know the saying, " Treat others the way you want to be treated " ?
