I'm probably going to sound rude here but just now that I feel for you & I hope Chance does well with his surgery.
<br>I don't think it's really.... humane to keep a dog outside all the time. Especially after his surgery, he should be kept inside, not outside in a kennel/doghouse but that's just my opinion.

Dene, I am so sorry for Chance, you and your boyfriend. I know the must be a hard time for you all. I own two labs, and one of my yellow ones is getting very old, with joint prolems. I fear that she migt not make it very much longer. Anyways, my thoughts go out to your family, and I hope everything goes okay with Chance's surgery and his recovery. *HUGS*

"There is no need for you to critisize dene's dog owner potential."
I'm not criticizing, it's simply a thing you have to be sure about before doing a surgery like that.
It's called "compliance" and it's the first thing a doctor should consider when suggesting a procedure instead of another.
Anyway I think your vets will give you enough instructions before doing the surgery.

Chance was being kept outside, in our backyard, where we have a six foot fence. He had been sleeping outside for a few weeks (with the garage open to him, because it was warmer)and has never shown any interest in getting out of the yard. I was not home when he got out, so I do not know exactly what happened, but my best guess is that, being as it was New Year's, someone was setting off fireworks or otherwise making loud noises, and Chance was frightened. One of the fence boards was torn loose, and we have no idea how he managed that. For now, he is being kept inside as he will be after the surgery. My boyfriend is also making him a dog house with a door that will double as a kennel for when he is recovering as we both work full-time jobs. In the time between now and his surgery, we are doing a ton of research and trying to get everything prepared for when he does have the surgery.

Bionda, accidents happen. Im sure many of us dog owners have had the misfourtune of our dog accidentally running off. There is no need for you to critisize dene's dog owner potential. What she needs now is support. I can tell she loves chance very much.

My dog broke a ligament in his back leg twice and the second time they noticed his back hips were around the wrong way when he was born. So he ended up having to have 3 operations on his back legs. We never kept him in a cage or only let him walk for a pee and hes fine. He also has arthritis in both his back legs but is living a good, healthy life and is as active as a little puppy.

"He got out on New Year's Day and when we got him back on the second (a very nice lady called and told me she had found him) he was not walking on his left back leg at all, likely hit by a car."
You have to think a lot of this chirurgical procedure, because after the surgery he must stay still inside a cage for a month, he can only do a couple of little walking a day to pee.
No jump, no run, no anything.
If you were not able to keep him in your house but he run out on new year, are you sure you'll be able to keep him controlled after surgery? That's the crucial part of the rehabilitation, so if you are not sure of that, you have to think about some other options, if not you could do more damage than now.
