I remember when I went kitten-hunting with my childhood friend (we were like 10 at the time), there was this 5- or 6-week old kitten in the shelter who was just the cuuuuutest little gray tabby. She had a really soft mewl and she could fit in the palm of your hand. Her name was Ethel. <3 But in the same cage as her, there was a feral kitten that spit and hissed at you. xD
Yeah, the New England area has the least puppies/kittens of all, right? xD You should do what I do - stalk Petfinder.com every day to see what cute puppies and kittens come in nearby. Of course, then you get attached like I did to Luna. :P Oh well. She's in a happy home somewhere else now.

Rofl, just don't end up with a "lab shepherd mix" like Ellie. xD We had her in a kennel while we were at Cape Cod, and after a week with her the old lady was like, "There is NO WAY this is a lab shepherd. She's a terrier." Personally, I think she's a terrier-hound-shepherd-maybe-pointer-or-spaniel-or-rottie mix.
