Northlands RP
The Northlands. Great, sweeping vistas of open tundra, with the treeline at your back and the endless Arctic spreading out ahead of you. Every wolf knows this place - even the rust-colored wolves of the South, the thin-furred, long-legged wolves an ocean away in the East, all of us - we all know this, where we fit best, where the country seemed to adapt to us instead of the other way around (though, of course, we are pleased with our strength in adaptation). No humans kick at us, build on our land, steal our pups - nothing is built to survive out here as we are. Sometimes the planes come, and it is bad. But mostly it is good. Hot, steaming meat red on the white plain, long running with the frothy frozen sea surging up beside you, enough territory for every pack to live like kings. Room to play, room to thrive. Our land. The Northlands.

Thickjaw lifted her head, flaring her nostrils, jaws parted to take in the air's taste, temperature, and messages. Nothing was amiss. Nose and ears picked up a herd of caribou a ways up the tundra, the wind steadily blowing her scent away from them. No bears to avoid, no little foxes to chase from fresh kills. Except for the constant wind, the plain was at peace.
Not so her pack. With a shake of her mane, the big wolf turned to look over the scruffy newcomers, loners who had so recently moved from trailing her pack to trotting with them. The others were uncomfortable with them yet, and it showed on the strangers' hides. Ah well. They would fight their way up from omega, settle to it, or fall away. She was perfectly content to wait and see. She glanced over her pups, young ones who had yet to find a place. Their road was easier, but still had yet to be travelled. Thickjaw whuffed through her teeth and walked among them, sure to brush her big shoulders against each packmate in turn, reassuring and dominating in a single movement. Her tail floated out straight behind her, head held high. It was time.
She hunched her shoulders, making her mane ripple above them, and stared over the pack. Pulling back her lip ever so slightly, she spoke -
"We are hungry. Our kill is done and scattered to the pests. We are a big pack, we need big food. Who will come to hunt deer?"
Ears flicking to catch each sound, she stepped back and waited for them to step forward.
Silas trotted behind the others he kept his distance from the pack. He didn't mind helping out in the hunt for he would get a some sum out of it. Silas' ears had twitched hearing the deer nearby. His mouth had begun to water.

The alpha female parted her jaws slightly in a panting grin of approval as her mate stepped forward to take the more aggressive role, adding proper harshness to her own concession and ensuring that both their statures were unharmed - no face lost as long as Grim ran at her side, that was one of the reasons she took him as mate to begin with. Once the pack's voices had died away, she licked her lips and gave an energetic bark.

"Very well, then! MOVE OUT!"

Without waiting to see who followed, she launched into a trot, quickly settling into that distance-eating lope that all wolves share. The big female headed toward the nearby herd, head high and tail stiff. She was leading her followers to a heavy copse of trees near the big deer, where the tangled undergrowth provided plenty of cover for a hunting party...
Carrion spotted his father and his eyes gleamed. He kept the serious expression on his face, not moving his gave anywhere from the Alpha Male. All these distractions were keeping them from hunting. He was eager to go, however he stayed with the pack. No need for a rush, as it would not catch prey any faster.

"Understood!" He spoke loudly, dipping his head to the Alpha Male, and lowering down his tail. This was the respectful thing to do, and he respected his father very much. The work and love he puts into the pack really made Carrion impressed.

His eyes flickered again to the male, and he flicked his tail. In his head, he grinned as his father declared no meat for the loners until they have proven themselves.

"Fine day for a hunt, I suppose...but I'll be sharing no meat with some worthless vagabond. If you aren't with this pack, I'll consider you against it, until you prove otherwise. No meat! Not even if you do manage to take anything down. Or else I'll punish every scrap you steal by taking it out of -your- hide." A much larger wolf than Souta had said as he curled his lips. Souta only glanced over at the wolf that had spoken to him. He didn't reply nor did he want to say anything for it could start a fight between the to of them.

"I will not tolerate failure. Our pack will have its feast, no matter what. Remember what we've taught you; bite with purpose and go for the legs, cripple the creature and tear out its flanks. Leave the throat to me or the Pack Mother. Understood?" He then announced.

"If we work as a team and read each others movements we can take down any elk." Souta had added, perked his ears raised his head up but he kept his tail down to show that submission. For it was safer for a stranger in a pack to at like an underling then go about trying to prove him or herself who is boss. And it wasn't like he was going to that anyhow he preferred to be a ow ranked wolf, life seemed easier that way expect for the occasional beat downs by the upper pack members.
Grim finally stood up and shook the boredom from his body, his shaggy, unkempt dark fur ruffling with the movement. His voice was rough and ragged as he spoke, eyeing the strangers scornfully as his upper lip curled.

"Fine day for a hunt, I suppose...but I'll be sharing no meat with some worthless vagabond. If you aren't with this pack, I'll consider you against it, until you prove otherwise. No meat! Not even if you do manage to take anything down. Or else I'll punish every scrap you steal by taking it out of -your- hide."

His eyes turned to the small group of younglings that stepped forward to join them, huffing down at them as he pushed his chest outward and perked his torn ears.

"I will not tolerate failure. Our pack will have its feast, no matter what. Remember what we've taught you; bite with purpose and go for the legs, cripple the creature and tear out its flanks. Carrion glanced at the newcomer, but turned away. He disliked those who trespassed. The tough-looking make raised his tail at a medium height, making sure not to pass his mother, as she was of a higher position, and her tail would always be higher, showing a dominance only she had.

"I'm ready to go." He said in a respectful manner, but eyeing the wolf invited to hunt with such a pack like his. He wrinkled his nose slightly, but continued away, feeling the earth with his paws. Carrion tried to feel any type of rumbling or vibrations. The prey always made such a noise when in a stampede.

This was his chance to prove to his mother that he was a loyal, dedicated member to the pack, and he, once again, puffed his chest out, almost making him as big as his mother.

"Just going hunting, were you? In our territory?" The alpha had spoke has she curled her top lip even further. Souta had kept his tail down and his head low in respect. "Well, you might as well come along, since we're testing omegas and most of our young ones and newcomers apparently haven't the gut to step forward. Which reminds me," -here she raised her voice yet higher -"this is your last call to be tested this hunt, you quiet lot, you tailtuckers."

When he had heard her say this Souta had sighed in relief, but now he was stuck hunting with them. So, it seemed. Souta lifted his tail slightly just from a thought of hunting with other wolves again. "I am no tailtucker," he proclaimed. "I am always up for a hunt." He told the alpha has he made his way past her. He still had his head low but he moved his ears forward to listen to the elk that were nearby.

Glancing at the rest of her pack to gauge their mood, her ears pushed forward in a display of dominance, Thickjaw lifted her head, golden eyes piercing Souta through and through as she neared him.

"Just going hunting, were you? In our territory?" She lifted her lip yet farther, tail held stiffly behind her, belying her syrupy-sweet tone. "Hmf." Casually the bigger, older wolf shot her paw out to cuff the younger one. "We'll see about that." She sighed haughtily, and with a flick of her tail, spoke in a resigned tone clearly meant to carry. "Well, you might as well come along, since we're testing omegas and most of our young ones and newcomers apparently haven't the gut to step forward. Which reminds me," -here she raised her voice yet higher -"this is your last call to be tested this hunt, you quiet lot, you tailtuckers."

“You're not from the pack! What do you want, stranger?" A large wolf had said while she bared her teeth. Silas had taken a few steps back and lowered his head. The best he could do to show that he meant no harm.

“I wasn’t meaning to intrude, my apologies,†Souta begun to say as politely as he could lone wolves hardly had conversations with other wolves, not that they were unsocial, it was just safer not too. For a lone wolf fighting up against a pack of wolves is a dead wolf. “I am Souta and I was just on my way to hunt and wasn’t paying any attention to where I was heading.†
Thickjaw looked up sharply at the black newcomer, teeth bared. "You're not from the pack! What do you want, stranger?" She hunched her big shoulders and bristled her mane, advancing stiff-legged towards the strange-eyed wolf.
