Al\'s Novel

okay, there is a reason why this posted here :P

Anyways, I want opinions. If you saw this book in a book store and read the blurb, would you buy it?

""Many, many years ago, back to a time when the world was run by spirits and demons, there was a legend. A white wolf was said to be the harbringer of disaster. Each time a white wolf was brought into a village, it would later one day burst into flames, consuming all of those who lived within.

A single white wolf finds himself one day in the middle of a forest, alone and hungry. He raises himself for years before he is found by a young boy, and soon a friendship is raised. Little does the wolf know that the boy's village, led by a Spirit Witch, is hunting down the wolf after they discover his existance, and soon enough, burn the forest down. The spirits, believing that the wolf was respnsible for the burning, throw him off of a cliff and leave him alone once again. However, the wolf is not aware that he is being followed by a hunter.

Now, the boy and wolf need to find a way to reunite with each other while dealing with new and old friendships, death, and in two cases, love. But just what will they have to do in order to find each other?""

Now, thats the blurb, but if you bought the book, and found out that the two loves were between a wolf and a jackal, and two males, would you stop reading?

Or would I have to incorporate something into the blurb to make people happy?

I don't want someone reading my story and realizing that there is gay love in my story. And if I am able to get the guts, maybe even a hint of them having sex at one point...

But I want opinions -.-

OKAY clarifying: the wolf and jackal are male and female. The sex would be between the boy and the hunter, who are both MALE humans

Not a huge fan of wolves in novels (what immediately comes to mind is Call of the Wild which I don't like very much at all), so I'm not the intended audience, but as someone who writes and has taken many writing and publishing courses in universities, I think you have something here, just based on the description. Obviously I couldn't make any judgement without the manuscript in my hand, but there is certainly an audience for your novel.

As for the male/male romance - no, you wouldn't have to say anything about it in the blurb (unless you wanted to). I've read many, many novels with gay or lesbian romance that mentioned nothing in the blurb (The Teahouse Fire, The Book of Lost Things, and Gargoyle just to name a few - The Book of Lost Things and Gargoyle completely surprised me and have become 2 of my favorite novels of all time). Readers who look for gay romance in novels should be able to find it, meaning you'll have to work hard to market GLBT community, and without the mention you may be able to surprise readers who may not have otherwise picked up the book. Take my word for it - if you write well enough, if you are capable of captivating readers, they won't care about the male/male romance. If they put the book down because of it, they are bigots and aren't your intended audience anyway.

You know, it's really funny you posted this today. I was having a huge mental anguish over my novel. I'm recycling an old idea because my new year's resolution was to get more writing done. The idea in the past involved male/male romance. I was thinking of changing it to a girl to make it more conventional. It would probably get more readers that way. But then I realized that Clive Barker - my personal hero, my absolute favorite author who never fails to take my breath away - is ALL about being bold with writing. His books have countless male/male romances, among other controversial subjects. He is controversial in his movies, literature, and personal life (he is openly gay and has done a lot for the community) so if I want to honor him, I would be brave in my writing and step out of my comfort zone.

Anyway, just my two cents. I hope I've helped you somewhat. :)
I might've gotten a bit carried away in writing this, but I've taken creative writing classes (am in one now) so I've gotten accustomed to giving somewhat in-depth review on stories from a writer's and reader's perspective.. o.O

/disclaimer (>.<)

I would think about buying it (I'm realy picky with my fantasy - so far I've only been able to stomach the A Song of Ice and Fire series and I highly recommend it, especially to other writers - it'll really get you thinking about how you treat the craft and formulate plots..it's seriously as close to genius as I think a mere mortal can get >.<), but the male love thing wouldn't make me put it down if I was really engrossed in the story. It wouldn't tip the tables in favor of me buying it, but it wouldn't hurt its chances. Does that make sense? It's kind of late for me to be trying to form coherent sentences XD

I think if you don't include it in the blurb (I thought those were written by the publishing companies, anyway, but I could be wrong), you might want to hint at it (or at least drop in little things, maybe his in thoughts or actions?) relatively early on. Readers don't like to be surprised with details like that. (Trust me - I did a short story about a deaf woman without introducing she was deaf until the fifth out of ten pages, and everyone in my class was like "Waaaa! You must tell sooner!!" *sigh*) As a straight female reader, when I get a certain idea of a male main character in my head (image, personality, gay/straight/what have you) I like to cling to it, and if I form the image of a handsome straight male lead (or even minor character) and I get attached to that idea of him, I get fidgety if I find out he's not straight. It's like I've put effort into forming him one way, and I have trouble trying to change my original idea of him.

But yeah, the blurb sounds interesting and I think if you're able to pull your reader deep enough into the story, a detail like that (as long as it isn't sprung on them all of a sudden in the middle of the novel) shouldn't make them want to stop reading. But it all depends on the person...But yeah.

And now that I've practically written a novel about your novel, I'ma go...over there >.>
shin XD

The original storyline did not have the hunter, and I was afraid that the boy would be paired with the wolf.

With the hunter, it works out well ;)

I actually have walkig cat versions of them on my profile.

but the sex would probably be like describing everything at first, then switching to another scene.
w00t :).
Haha, I would buy it! Great story line.
and yes, I'm writing it right now, got 45 pages done ;)
Okay I thought that. I thought that it would be with the males..wolfies getting on, just isn't my kool aid.
Haha, I would buy it! Great story line.
