American Bully

Do you acknowledge the dogs as a breed? What are your opinions on the dogs? Do you consider the registry to be reputable? What are your thoughts on the overall community, whether owners or so-called professional breeders? Overall what is your opinion on the dog?

My grandmother owns one. She purchased it for $200 and considers it a rescue. The puppy had been the runt, the breeder was considering putting it down just because it wasn't "bully enough", and the owner neglected to provide the shots it needed.

She's a product of reckless inbreeding and I'm sure many genetic health issues are going to spring up one of these days. She already has a hereditary type of "concentrated" mange (I have no idea what the proper term is) that affects only the spot between her shoulder blades.

Honestly, I love her personality. She's goofy and it's funny to watch her zip around the yard. She's always willing to lick somebody and she let our chickens sit on her back, which was quite funny. Thankfully my grandmother started her on a diet so she's not one of those overweight hippos you see. She can almost keep up with my American Pit Bull Terrier.

Now, onto my opinions on the breed from what I've seen.
I do not currently see it as a breed. Glorified hybridized mutts for thugs is all I see. I apologize to those of you who own one and don't fit that stereotype, but the local owners where I am located fit it exactly.

As I stated above, I love my grandmother's dog because of her charming personality, but most American Bullies I've met have just been dull and lifeless. It's like a 24/7 mope fest. It's likely more to do with the fact the owners hit their dog for every d-mn thing than the dogs actual personality...

I have mixed feelings on the ABKC. Generally I do not like it.

I have yet to see one breeder that isn't shady and promotes good breeding ethics. It's all about the "freaks", "exotics", and money. Show me a good breeder and my thoughts may change.

IMO, the breed is a disgrace. I understand they're trying to make a dog with less dog aggression but I constantly have to call BS when they say they have bred all aggression. The breed has only been around fifteen or so years!

Many breeders also claim genetic health isn't an issue and they religiously inbreed their dogs. First of all, there are way too many genetic health issues with the dogs that you couldn't possibly name them all in one sitting. Secondly, I don't mind when breeders responsibly inbreed their dogs to lock in a trait but then strive to rid future litters of flaws it may have introduced, but it seems to be a fad to see how much "x" you can get in a pedigree. I don't care how much "Dax" or "Juan Gotti" is in a dog, just give me one that's functional in work and intelligent!

Appearance also always seems to win over health with American Bullies. They breed for "low riders", easty-westy, roach backs, splayed paws, and overall terrible conformation (but wait, lets just make a class called exotics and make it where faults are considered acceptable!) and it disgusts me.

Lastly, money. The dogs are overpriced considering the fact they can't even function. Non-registered dogs can have a stud fee exceeding $3,000. Everything within the "Bully World" is overpriced, from the magazines and T-shirts to freaking dog collars I can buy at PetSmart for less than ten dollars.

That being said, I don't mind some of the classics. They remind me of Amstaffs but I suppose that's better than them looking like a bulldog bred to a Boston Terrier.

Please understand I'm not attempting to be hateful to the breed or those who own them. If you own one, great! I'm glad you found a breed you like. Just please be a responsible owner and don't turn into one of the people described above.

I also apologize if any of this was jumbled and/or didn't make sense. I'm not very good at being the first to post in debates...

I know this post hasn't had a new reply in ages but I just couldn't help but read and want to post.<br /> <br /> Personally, I <i>partially</i> see them as a breed. I say partial because I hate that they are referred to as American Pit Bull Terriers by 99.9% of the kennels that breed them. They are nowhere near being a APBT and should not be referred to as one. A lot of people have been ripped off because they're labeled as Pit Bulls. It really just burns me up when I go on a kennel and they're called "Bully Pit Bulls". The registry is horrible. They will register anything. I also hate, hate, hate how they have different forms of the Am Bully. The Pocket Bullies are probably the ugliest thing I have ever seen in my whole life.<br /> <br /> The XL and Extreme bullies look like they have heart attacks waiting to happen. Overall, I like the classic and standard am bullies to a certain extent. It just depends on the breeder, lineage, known health issues from earlier generations, etc. I can, however, agree and say that they are an overdone designer breed.<br /> <br /> I'm going to be straight to the point about the Am Bully community. The overall community is mostly a load of bull****. Almost all american bully breeders, if not all, promote breeding for head size, wide chests, and color. I'm pretty sure temperament is not even an important factor in these dogs at all and we all see that health isn't a big deal either. I've been researching the life span of these dogs and it's said to be an average of 6 - 7 years. I know there a few other breeds like Great Danes that don't live very long though. Me personally, I am not going to pay $1000 for a dog that won't live very long and has a load of hidden health problems waiting to show no matter what breed it is. I think if Am Bullies were bred by more responsible breeders, I'd like the community but overall, I can't stand it. I joined an Am Bully forum once and haven't been back. Couldn't stand it. The so called "bloodlines" these dogs have also really piss me off. Razor's Edge, Gottiline, Greyline, etc. <br /> <br /> Overall, I'm also partial with the breed as a whole. Most of the Am Bullies I've seen are downright hideous. I hate the bullies that have muscles like the Incredible Hulk and chests that are so wide, it's disgusting. Again, I don't hate the breed, just the breeders. I've seen some that were just beautiful. I met one in person a few months back and he had a beautiful temperament and didn't have those really ugly wide chests that Am Bully breeders promoted. To me, he was an example of what they should look and act like. I'm also in love with the Tri Color Am Bullies again, depending on overall health, build, temperament, etc. <br /> <br /> So yeah, that's my whole opinion on the Am Bully situation. My opinion is if we got rid of the ABKC, dumb breeders that just breed for money and to make them worse, and focused more and bettering and not bashing it, I think they would appeal to more people. However, I doubt this will ever happen because a lot of people have long made them to be a tough guy dog with all those freakin spiked collars, heavy chains, etc. No harm in dressing up the dog but what the Am Bully community does is way overdone and it needs to stop. These dogs have definitely fallen into the wrong hands.

<b>It's a kennel club that will register a donkey as a pointer if you get the lighting right.</b><br /> <br /> OH! pfff ahaha I remember that one! There is no doubt in my mind that they would register an AmBully. I bet they register Cockapoos too

<i>CKC rings a bell... I'm not sure I know what that is.</i><br /> It's a kennel club that will register a donkey as a pointer if you get the lighting right.<br /> <br /> <i>I don't see AmBully on the ukc website though</i><br /> Exactly, people register them as "American Pit Bull Terriers" when they want their dog under UKC. I saw one guy get laughed out of the ADBA for trying to register his AmBully as an APBT. <br /> <br /> <i>Your dog is gorgeous by the way :)</i><br /> Thank you!

<b>Here's a question, which is better in your opinion - Continental Kennel Club or American Bully Kennel Club? How do you feel about the United Kennel Club "allowing" them to be registered?</b><br /> <br /> CKC rings a bell... I'm not sure I know what that is.<br /> I don't like ABKC because they push breeding this mislabeled, defect-riddled designer "tough dog" breed.<br /> I don't see AmBully on the ukc website though<br /> <br /> Your dog is gorgeous by the way :)

How did I know Clayton would be the first to respond... <br /> <br /> You're right, they shouldn't be bred. The dogs are walking deformities and I feel bad for them.<br /> <br /> <br /> Here's a question, which is better in your opinion - Continental Kennel Club or American Bully Kennel Club? How do you feel about the United Kennel Club "allowing" them to be registered?<br /> <br /> I went to an American Bully weight pull and show because, hey, it was five minutes away and I wanted to see what it was about. The dogs couldn't even pull a hundred pounds. My APBT does that for warm-up (not really, but you get my gist, I hope). <br /> <br /> Lamia's pedigree goes like this -<br /> Father to daughter; daughter to son; son to daughter; and then grandfather to daughter. If that makes any sense... Basically, I don't see how she's made it a year and a half already. ._. Whadya know, she's Razor's Edge and Gotti with some "Gaff".<br /> <br /> To anybody curious, here's my APBT.<br /> <a href=http://i50.tinypic.com/14y73t1.jpg rel=nofollow>Click</a> and <a href=http://i50.tinypic.com/2i084m8.jpg rel=nofollow>click</a>. We participate in weight pull, agility, the occasional con. show, flirt/spring/whatever-you-want-to-call-it pole, and trick training, IE bringing me the phone when it rings.

<b>Do you acknowledge the dogs as a breed?</b><br /> I acknowledge it as a breed as much as I acknowledge a Jackapoo, Cockapoo, Bug, Jackmatian, etcetc as a breed lol<br /> <br /> <b>What are your opinions on the dogs?</b><br /> It may sound cruel but I don't believe they should be bred; they serve no purpose and never have. They are <b>purely</b> for show, created by the dudes who want to show off their "Pit Bull" on a chain, falsely label it as a APBT and then breed "purebred blue-nosed Pit Bulls" lol without any temperament testing or anything; just purely for show and it's despicable.<br /> <br /> <b>Do you consider the registry to be reputable?</b><br /> Not a chance. Not. a. chance. They falsely label their dogs as another breed, why would I trust what they say about their dog? lol<br /> <br /> <b>What are your thoughts on the overall community, whether owners or so-called professional breeders? Overall what is your opinion on the dog?</b><br /> Pretty much explained in the above. American Bullies, "Shorty-Bulls", American Bulldogs, etc.. should not be bred.<br /> <br /> <b>It's all about the "freaks", "exotics", and money.</b><br /> Lol it's all about LOW-RIDIN DAWGGGSS<br /> <a href="http://mrpitbull.com/Pictures/bandit-muscle-close.jpg">[LOL link]</a><br /> <br /> <b>Many breeders also claim genetic health isn't an issue and they religiously inbreed their dogs.</b><br /> The inbreeding in some of the "Pit Bull" (American Bully) lines is absolutely atrocious. I'm not talking like.. grandfather to granddaughter, but it's like grandfather to daughter to granddaughter. I'm not even joking, google "Razors Edge Pit Bulls" or "Gotti" or similar and look at the lineage.<br /> <br /> <br /> In the end, I don't like em. I don't think they should be bred and they certainly should not continue being falsely labeled as APBT. It's a disgrace to the real APBT.
