Pedigree Dogs Exposed: The Years On
I'd like to say that anybody who HASN'T seen "Pedigree Dogs Exposed", watch the first half of this movie. For those who have, watch the second: http://www.lifewithdogs.tv/2012/02/pedigree-dogs-exposed-three-years-on/
I figured this would be more suitable for 18+ because I don't feel like having this dragged into Debate to be fought over. I'd rather have it here so mature people can watch it, for those who take interest in this sort of thing.
"I can imagine it like it's a perpetual cold you have when you can't get the normal intake of air except for us it eventually clears but not for these poor dogs."

Ugh god I can't even imagine what it feels like to suffocate your entire life. I think Pugs are cute (in the sense that I think persian cats are cute. It's a so-ugly-it's-cute thing.. but I don't support either of them.

I was once told by a Persian cat owner that Persians don't have breathing problems lol.
I literally just lol'd my way out of that conversation
"And we do have trouble nowadays with the young vets who tend to see everything in black and white and won't put them down. It's a healthy, beautiful puppy; there's nothing wrong with it except it hasn't a ridge, and you say, 'Well, actually, they're meant to have ridges.' It's not easy, and uh, usually we end up having to go to an old vet that we've known for years to just quietly put them to sleep. I would rather they were put down under my care than they landed in the hands of the fighting people, which is appalling."

*slams head on desk*

I don't think I'll ever be able to forget that quote. Or, y'know, the entire movie.

I was aware before that brachycephalic animals had problems with breathing and skin fold hygiene, but I wasn't aware of the extent of it. That's highly disturbing. Clearly the skull shape is not functional. I guess I don't understand their mindset. I don't even own a pug/bulldog/etc, but learning how many health problems can stem from their structure, I don't ever want to support such a warped breed standard. For someone who actually owns/breeds that kind of dog, shouldn't they feel even stronger about it than I do? Or are they desensitized? I don't know.

I agree with Kaitie, that guy almost laughing as he said "It could have been worse" made me want to shout at him.

The whole part with the dalmatians was moderately enraging. That is, that people wouldn't want to accept a dog identical to breed standard just because it has one other dog a few generations up its family tree. I mean, for god's sake, it sounded like it was 90% purebred dalmatians anyway. Shouldn't they cherish genetic diversity? Especially to reintroduce a gene to prevent illness? I'm sure a lot of other breeds could also use a dose of fresh genes.

I find Al's post a little conflicting? With the wanting to breed but at the same time not liking what this video is saying?

Anyways I watched both parts. What I found just crazy was how we changed complete bone structures and how they showed them morphing to what they are today.

None of the people showing had anything decent to say to the problem and are sticking their fingers in their ears going "LALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

I've never liked pugs because their eyes are just bulging (the shallow eye sockets) and their obnoxious snorting because they can't breathe. I can imagine it like it's a perpetual cold you have when you can't get the normal intake of air except for us it eventually clears but not for these poor dogs.

We owned a german shepherd but we got a working one because my parents weren't fans of the sloped backs. How can they possibly do what they were meant to do when their back end is so weak that they shake when standing? It makes no sense. I love how the one guy was saying they were being bred with the other dogs that can do the job but obviously that's not true. He was blowing it out his butt for a political response. A politicians answer, saying something without saying anything at all and only promoting their side.

The things that got me shocked in the video summed up:
-Changing bone structure
-The king charles spaniel in pain on the floor
-The dog with the seizures
-Ignorant guy almost laughing in an annoying way saying, "It could have been worse"
-Breed comparisons from the 1800s to now
-Outrageous studding with sires having up to 900 puppies (If thats not flooding the pool I dont know what is)
EDIT:

I understand they're the same, (didn't know they were dwarf dogs) but I feel like with corgis, there's no choice. You won't find a tall corgi.

However, you can find a GSD that has a very minimal slope, and you can use that as one of the things to keep in a line.

Corgis are a dwarf dog and have issues just like the GSD, even if both are not herding.
Corgis are the dog form of a Munchkin cat.
[LINK]

So it's a bit confusing to me why you state "breeding for just looks is disgusting", "purebred dogs like GSDs have health defects" when you plan on breeding dwarf dogs.

I don't event think I can stomach this.

It does bother me, especially because I have my purebred maltese now.

His front legs stand awkwardly (as in the point outwards when he stands) and he has a respiratory problem that his parents also had. I don't know if it was a result of the pet store breeding, if it was a breeder, or a puppy mill.

All I know is that if a dog shouldn't have to be bred because the owner makes money on its looks. I currently have my "step" dog, Brutus who is a GSD and he doesn't have the slouched back. And I LOVE that he doesn't, because it makes him look so much more beautiful.

And yes, I want a corgi. Yes, I want to breed them, but if EITHER parent is sick/has some sort of health defect/ etc. it will be spayed/neutered because I NEVER want to pass something down like that to future pups.

Dogs should be used for their working purpose, and I think a lot of people sometimes are ignorant when choosing a dog solely for a pet, because they ignore a lot of the defects that particular pet might have.

"Oh, who cares if the GSD has a slouched back. It's not like it's going to be herding or anything." That's what a lot of people might think when in reality, the dog will develop hip problems and other issues.

I watch dog shows, but only in the sense that I like naming al the different breeds that show up. But seeing this video gives me a lot more insight.
The AKC ruins dogs, plain and simple. They take good dogs, label them into groups like WORKING and SPORT.. you know.. what the breed was created to do.. and then morph them into obese, disfigured freaks.
Aint no English Bulldog gonna have a chance against a bull
Slanty, roach-backed GSDs aint gonna perform like their non-disfigured cousins
Neapolitan Mastiff? F.uck, don't even get me started

My opinion? Dogs are working animals first, pets second. A dog who cannot work hard enough to earn his keep is in the wrong family.
The AKC has created dogs that aren't able to fulfill their original genetic purpose, they're useless.
When that poor Boxer was crying out, I began to cry. This is horrible, I had no idea that most pedigrees were horribly inbred, but, I guess that's what explains the terrible health problems. I'm horrified that people would go this far just to have "beautiful" dogs.
And that pedigree show dog judge, Tarry Hannan, and what he said about how the show dog GSD's anatomical structure is the "correct" way GSD's are supposed to be made me want to puke.
