I saw the dog open his eyes then quickly close them again.I decided it was best to leave unless I wanted to be chased by a hungry dog.But something held me there and I wasn't sue it was time for me to leave just yet.I stayed right where I was hiding behind the barn door watching the girl and her little puppy.
I peeked my eyes open and saw her put some food on the ground. I went back to sleep.
In the distance I smelled fox and Terry. I ignored it and figured I'd see Terry later and chase the fox later too
I was walking angrily through neighborhood after neighborhood trying to find an abandoned house to sleep in.It was around 3:30 in the morning when I smelled cat.Big cat.I looked over and walking a little dog was the girl at the barn.I stopped and stared at her.She didn't look my way but continued walking with her dog.I stood there for a moment watching her walk away.Should I follow?I did and came up the the horse barn.I peeked in and saw her setting her little dog on a horses back. She left with the dog and climbed up to a barn loft then came back and grabbed food. She set those down on the loft then came back down.I was puzzled for a second then saw a dog sleeping there.
I stared at him for a few seconds but then he left just as soon as he appeared.I went back to my bed to wake Terry up but he was already up looking at the retreating figure.
"Come on Terry time to go on a walk."I said clapping my hands lightly.Terry barked once then started wagging his tail.I grabbed his leash and took him quietly through the hall to the door.I opened it and walked out into the quiet neighborhood.I decided to go to the barn but on my way there I saw a boy about my age with blonde hair and black streaks he had an angry look on his face I decided to try to avoid him but his smell caught me off guard.Fox.I shook it off and headed for the barn. When we got there I turned on the front lights Cacciatore was awake whinnying a greeting to me.I went over to his stall and scratched his head.I picked up Terry to show Cacciatore. He sniffed him and looked at him warily but I know he liked him.I sat Terry on Cacciatore's back Cacciatore whinnied but made no protest.I heard scurrying in the barn loft and went up.In a bed of straw was a dog with a hat.Olive.I went back down trying not to wake him.I opened the fridge with one hand the other holding Terry.I got out an orange and couple of energy and candy bars plus a cartoon of chocolate milk.I closed the fridge and tied Terry's leash to a pole.I went up with the food balancing in one hand I laid the food on the loft a few feet away from Olive and went back down.
I was in Chloe's front lawn, having followed her scent from the kennel and her barn. I smelled under the trees and in the grass and noticed that Terry was already getting situated in his new home.
I was happy that he could find a happy home, the shelter dogs were like family to me. I never wanted to see them go but I knew that they would have a better life where they were going than in the kennel.
I left her yard and went to her barn for another rest in the stuffy loft, nestled in the plush hay.
I was out stone cold.I was dead to the world but not for as long as I wanted. The alarm made me jump.3am the neon numbers read.I groaned and plopped back on my bed Terry had settled in nicely sleeping in his bed next to me.I got up and went to the bathroom careful to not wake up Gina and her husband in the next room.A hot shower woke me up and released all the tension from the weekend.I got dressed quickly and saw a dog outside on the front lawn. Why does he look familiar? I thought.
After Chloe left, I was back to my usual tending to the dogs. I was looking over the ones that had been here for a while and was hoping that they could get homes soon before they had to be put down. I felt bad for them, stuck here. Granted they did have all the basic needs, they survive but don't really live. The thought distracted me and realized that I should get back to what I was supposed to be doing.
Once it was dark and I had to lock up the kennel, I thought of visiting Chloe and checking on the new pup. I shut and locked the front doors then exited out the back after I hid my stuff in the back room and left for Chloe's horse barn, guessing that her house may be close and I could follow a scent to it.
I adjusted my hat one last time and set off on all fours.
I ran from the shelter hearing the dogs barking at me.I ran uptown towards a neighborhood. The neighborhood was queit and was sickenly cute.I ran a few feet to a bright blue house I entered the house as a human. My brother was in the living room watching TV with his two kids and wife.
"Simon!"he yelled.
"What?"I snarled.I heard him get of the couch he was about 10 years older than me with two 8 year old twins.
"Where have you been all week?Just because Mom and Dad are gone doesn't mean you can be wandering the streets."He yelled angrily.
"Alright dad.I don't care what you say.You can boss around your kids not me."I said standing up to him.
"Fine then you are no longer welcome at this house."He looked away the twins Kevin and Maya gasped in union.
"Fine."I marched up to my makeshift room and collected all the school supplies I needed and all the clothes I had into a large backpack.I marched up to the door and walked out never looking back at my brother's family.
"Simon!Don't go!"Maya called I didn't answer didn't look back just continued on around the corner.
Gina took out her wallet and fingered out four twenty dollar bills.Terry was still in my arms snozzing away.Gina put a hand on my back driving me towards the exit.I looked over my shoulder and waved hoping Gina wouldn't notice she did and that put a frown on her face.
"Who's that?"she asked I refrained from telling her the truth.
"Oh just a boy that I saw riding Cacciatore yesturday I don't know him though."I looked sideways and let out a low whistle.Gina then drove me to a local Petsmart store. We were greeted warmly by an employee who woke up Terry.I put him in the cart Gina got.She sent me on my way with Terry while she went to go talk with another employee about food and basic care finding the best ways to train and bond. The employee lead her to the racks of books on the far side of the store.I went down isle after isle looking for a suitable collar for Terry.I found a beautiful dark green one with blue patches.I tried it on Terry. He seemed to like it.I laughed at him continuing through the isles.I found him a dark brown bed I put it into the bottom of the kart with Terry he curled up and looked at me.I went onto food then to treats and toys. After an hour of looking the shopping cart was filled with new things for Terry including a leash. The sun had set and the streetlights outside light the parking lot. When everything was payed for Gina took me home.I went to my bedroom with a dozen shopping bags in one hand and balancing Terry who was nestled in his bed in the other.I put Terry and his bed right by my pillow while I went to go put the other things in empty drawers and spaces.
"Alright Terry just one more thing left.I took out od my pocket a shiny brass bone.I hooked it onto his collar.I tried out different names that Terry would respond to but the only name he would respond to was Terry. With is collar on and the sun down I went into the bathroom to get changed and ready for bed.I was waking up early tomorrow to take Terry on a walk before my first day at a new school.
I see Chloe in the back bonding with Terry and get back to the lady "It's $50 just for adoption but it costs another $50 for the booster puppy vaccinations and first vet check up that are needed in a couple weeks. It is slightly expencive but it's the fairest price that the kennel can provide."
I look back and see the dogs rushing to the fence and barking at a fox that was running off. It looked familiar and I hoped that another employee would calm the dogs down.
