Outdoor cats
I thought this might be an interesting one for Alacrity, as I assume most of us are animal lovers. What do you guys think about cats being allowed to roam free outside?
For me, personally, I am very much against it. I believe that cat owners should install cat runs if they wish to let their cats outside.
I am a wildlife carer and here in Australia cats are a serious threat to our natives. Almost every bird I've had come in due to cat attack has died shortly thereafter, and that's not even touching on those that die prolonged and painful deaths in the bush. All cats hunt, it is natural for them to do so. People who don't believe their cats are hunting are fooling themselves.
Furthermore, it is much safer for a cat to be kept indoors or in an enclosed outdoor area like a cat run. How many cats are run over by cars, abused by humans or attacked by other cats and dogs every year? How many unwanted litters of kittens are born to roaming cats?
Note that I do not hate cats. They are just doing what comes naturally to them. I blame the owners as it is their responsibility to manage their animals. (Also, I am not limiting this to just cats. I believe dogs should be kept confined too. However most dogs are kept in secure backyards and thus present no problem.)
Thoughts?

Because - like I said, the fur covered up the scratch.<br><br>Who knows, there could have been more scratches, but I didn't notice them.
I want one of those!<br /> <br /> I think outside enclosures are great. And come one, climbing in your own miniature jungle house sounds fun. lol

<i>"Just wanted to add Crayton. In a fight even the winner can die or get an infection."</i><br>Yep, I've seen that happen before. Stray cat was wobbling around with a swollen leg and it chewed the thing open and pus and blood came out. <br>Jambers, have you ever seen a cat fight before? Not a slapfest, but a real cat fight?<br><a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v48n3OS5W8Q&feature=related rel=nofollow>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v48n3OS5W8Q&feature=related</a><br>Declawed cats cannot do that.

" because no, your cat doesn't' always win. You know what cats do when they fight? [not play fighting], they jump on eachother, grab with their front claws, bite, and kick. A cat with no front claws doesn't stand a chance in a fight." <br /> <br /> uaa yeah it does, my moms cat Tony is declawed and Squeezer isnt, they have gotten into a fight before (when tony was first introduced into our home, Tony WAS my great grans cat, and she took him out on a leash, problem was tony dosent like the leash she ended up just dragging him around the yard wile he flung around trying to get away, my great gran was put into a old fokes home, shes in her 90's!) but Squeezer lost the fight because tony is bigger. <br /> <br /> My cats are declawed as well, except for some reson they left one claw on bare bare but she has 6 toes on each foot so that could have something to do with it.<br /> <br /> If a cat lost a fight it would have come home bloody, there would have been ovious signs.<br /> <br /> *head desk for not leaveing*

Just wanted to add Crayton. In a fight even the winner can die or get an infection. <br /> <br /> @SerpantSmile, do you leave the bones in the chicken when you cook it? Just wondering because cooked bones splinter and are very dangerous.<br /> <br /> Raw chicken is actually good for animals, but not processed raw chicken.<br /> <br /> ...Sorry if that's off topic, just trying to play it safe.

I REALLY don't like this: <i>"He's declawed in the front, which is why it's amazing he can even catch anything, let alone kill it. He gets in fights most of the time with other alley cats, but he always wins. ^_^"</i> because no, your cat doesn't' always win. You know what cats do when they fight? [not play fighting], they jump on eachother, grab with their front claws, bite, and kick. A cat with no front claws doesn't stand a chance in a fight.

I don't like the idea of outdoor cats. I mean, people could be feeding your cat stuff that you have no idea who touched it, where it came from, what diseases it has..Sure, I feed strays, but I also cook the chicken I leave out, and try to touch it little as possible.(I also set it on a paper towl, so no nasty crap from the ground gets on it) I'd keep my cat inside..
