Same-sex Marriage/Adoption/Lifestyle (expanded)

Should same-sex couples and families have the right to be joined in marriage with its benefits, or be contained within civil unions? Are the rights in civil unions adequate enough for dedicated partnerships or families to support on or not?

Should civil unions be allowed at all?

I want to bring up this debate as I am doing serious research paper required for the end of the year about ‘Social Justice’ and would like to see all sides of the spectrum.

Please, give posts with meaning than just putting ‘Yes! All the way!’ or ‘No! It’s wrong!’. Thank you.

Has been expanded!

Edit: Expanded to include same-sex lifestyle/adoption/marriage.

I am all for gay marriage and I think they should get the same benefits as regular marriages.

I see so many people who say "It's against the bible!" and "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!" Hate to break it to you, but the bible plays absolutely no part in this... or at least it shouldn't. Seperation of Church and State and all that stuff. Plus, marriage was around long before the christian religion even came about. They certainly weren't the ones to create it.

I think churches should not be forced to marry them if they choose not too, that's their own choice. The marriages would still be recognized by the law though and they could legally have ceremonies and such.

"you cannot have children, so the amount of people on this earth will start to dramatically decrease if this keeps up."

What a myth. There are certainly enough people on this planet to keep populating it for ever. As Nitrous and Clay pointed out, there are thousands of children just waiting to be adopted. What's wrong with letting them find homes before bringing even more babies into the world? If adoption is out of the question then there are always options like invetro. I actually know a couple of lesbians who have their own children too.

Another thing that bugs me about the "marriage is sacred" claim is that you see tons of straight couples taking it as a joke now. Celebrities and their one week marriages, getting drunk and having drive-thru weddings, etc. Lots of people even get married just because they want the benefits, not because it's a "special union with their lover."

Not to mention divorce rates are the highest they have probably ever been...
Ummm Laurasnake... there are two lesbian couples on my street and they both have kids..
LOL.

I literally /just/ heard this argument.

"And if you have a same-sex marriage [especially males], you cannot have children, so the amount of people on this earth will start to dramatically decrease if this keeps up."

There's nothing that biologically stops lesbians or gays from having children, or adopting. Think about the hundreds of thousands of orphan children in the United States alone. Do you not think they deserve homes?

And in case you weren't aware, the population of this world is nowhere near being even close to short on people. Quite the opposite, we are in a state of over-population. Hence, legally required population control in China.

10% of men are gay.
2% of women are lesbian.

This really isn't the dent in the population you think it's going to be. Even so, you can't force them to marry opposite-sex partners and have kids, there is nothing that can prohibit same-sex relationships and intercourse. They're going to either not have kids, or have kids, as they see fit.

A marriage, however, would simply allow them the legally-recognized rights they are entitled to.
Well, personally I do not support same-sex marriage. [Yes, I am a Christian...] God created two of each gender for a reason. And if you have a same-sex marriage [especially males], you cannot have children, so the amount of people on this earth will start to dramatically decrease if this keeps up.

Same-sex marriages are not proper marriages. They should not be permitted, and I think it is perfectly fine that they are not allowed in a numerous amount of places.

This is my opinion, and thank you.
I'd also like to state that I find it highly ironic that many Mormons promote polygamy, which is currently illegal in all fifty states, yet want to take away the marriage rights of others.

Yes, I think same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. Why is it that gay couples are held lower then straight? Not once have I ever heard of a reasonable explanation as to why they can't marry. It always refers to religion, which IMO is not a good argument when discussing whether or not gay marriage should be allowed. Gay marriage doesn't cause anybody to die or lose their jobs or anything, and I see nothing wrong with it.
I'm in full support same sex marriage, all benefits included.

I find that civil unions are just another way of saying "you're different, you still don't deserve the same rights as us", under the guise of it being legally recognized.

On of my favorite documentaries of all time is 8: The Mormon Proposition. (It's on Netflix instant play, if you have it) It documents the unconstitutional ties the Mormon church had to overturning legalized gay marriage in California. I cried through out the entire thing.

It really burns me as to how even today people can be so disgustingly ignorant and unwilling to recognize even basic human rights because some book said in some horribly twisted sentence that it's wrong.

However, I know that some day, just as civil rights movements in the past have prevailed, so will the rights for same-sex couples.

I only wish it could be sooner, and all these petty hyper-religious types would grow up.
It's about love.
